We congratulate these six young people (and their families) who have volunteered to run for Fiesta Royalty. We wish them well and pledge to support them along their journey.
Yiovanna Alvarado Yiovanna is the daughter of Carolina and Cesario Alvarado, and the granddaughter of Jose and Maria Cerca and Pedro and Conception Alvarado. She a senior at Highland Park, where she is active in Hispanic Club, soccer, tennis, and honor roll. She plans to attend college next year and study to become an ultra-sound technician.She is running for Fiesta Queen because she cares about the school her brothers and sisters attend and wants them to get a good education.
Melissa Gomez Melissa is the daughter of Anita Tinoco and the late Pedro Gomez. Her grandparents are Ray and Lupe Tinoco and Delbert and Carman Guthrie. Melissa is a senior at Hayden High School and attended Holy Family Grade School. She is active in the youth group, campus ministers, Faith in Action and People to People. Previous achievements include the Mother Teresa Award for Service and Little Miss LULAC. She hopes to attend Avila College this fall and work toward a medical business degree. She is running for Fiesta Queen because she loves to help others and give back to her community.
Sergio Lopez Sergio is the son of Maria and Sergio Lopez. He has two sisters and one brother. He is currently a sophomore at Topeka High School and attended middle school at Holy Family. He is active in tennis. His future plans are to become a firefighter or tattoo artist. He is running for Fiesta King to help do something for the school and church.
Chelsea Garcia Newman Chelsea is the daughter of John Newman and Debra Garcia-Newman. She is the granddaughter of George and (the late) Rosallie Garcia, and John and Carol Newman. She attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Grade School and Berryton Elementary, and is currently attending Shawnee Heights High School. She is active in StuCo, HALO, NJROTC, SADD, ORBIT, and much more. She is also a dancer with Ballet Folkorico de Topeka, a singer with Mariachi Luna Azul, and a member of MANA de Topeka's Hermanitas program. After high school she plans to attend the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in the medical field. She is running for Fiesta Queen because she feels that church has been like her second home. Her involvement with cultural and community events have made her aware of her diverse heritage and responsibility to her church. Running for Fiesta Queen is a family tradition as well as an honor.
Brianna Flores Stamps Brianna is the daughter of Michael Stamps and Andrea Flores-Stamps. Her grandparents are Guadalupe and Irene Flores and Anita Stamps. She attends Highland Park High School where she is junior. She is involved in AVID, Advanced placement classes, Daddy's Girls, Link Crew, ROTC, Upward Bound and Math Club. After graduating from high school, she plans to attend college to study photography and graphic design. Brianna is running for Fiesta Queen because she has cousins that attend Holy Family School and although she did not attend the school, it is important to her.
Blaine Thompson Blaine is the son of Victoria and Kent Albers. His grandparents are Carol and George Albers and Sharon and Rudolfo Santellano. He has five siblings. He attended Holy Family Grade School and currently attends Seaman High School. He is involved in Future Farmers of America (FFA). He attends Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe and helps with most fund raisers. He intends to go to college after he finishes high school and major in business and accounting. Blaine is running for Fiesta King because is siblings still attend Holy Family School, and wishes to support them and the school. He is excited about the campaign because he enjoys cooking and hopes to gain more experience in the kitchen.
